genestealer cults

dystopian gothic punk in a feudal world

Welcome to the Genestealer Cults series: Cult of the Leper God.
This course will start by laying the foundations for our narrative for the Cult of the Leper God, displaying how to lay down the initial steps to create a world or set of characters with the use of references and concept boards.
After that, we can start building our characters and give them an identity, with a build guide that focuses on creating a dystopian gothic punk aesthetic, and subsequently paint all the models – Acolyte Hybrids, Aberrant, and Genestealers, revisited to fit the lore with a body horror feel.
Lastly, we explore vehicles, tanks and characters using bits and pieces from scale modeling kits for a more grounded look.

Curriculum

  • Episode 1 – Overview and Introduction
  • Episode 2 – Miniature Building Philosophy
  • Episode 3 – Acolytes Painting
  • Episode 4 – Aberrant Painting
  • Episode 5 – Genestealers
  • Episode 6 – Assault Tank

    This must be serendipity incarnate!
I’ve just been writing down some notes and ideas over the last couple of weeks about a splinter Genestealer Cult, cut off from the Hive Mind due to the Patriarch having an extensive brain injury from a mutagenic acid that has also twisted its DNA.
Kept alive in an amniotic stasis tank and worshipped as The Sleeping God, the cult driven by its dreams and nightmares and becoming twisted physically and
    mentally.
So much of the introduction fits with what I have been noting down including the main inspirational image.
Really looking forward to watching the rest of this series, it looks beautiful and I am looking forward to the leather technique in particular!

That is great!! I’m glad that we share common inspirations and ideas. Check out Tyranids Episode 4. A lot of what we came up with for the GSC narrative was introduced in that video.

Thanks for the suggestion bud, another awesome series. And I picked up a brush applicated super glue while shopping for future experiments 🙂

      2. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

Great!!! Let me know when you try the glue technique.

    2. Dark Ages Workshop says:

This sounds awesome, I can’t wait to see your work come to life and I’ll eagerly follow it.
As Zatcaskagoon said Tyranids Episode 4 has a lot to do with this, as that episode really was a springboard for me to start creating this GSC.
That is basically how I would envision a Patriarch.
Stay tuned, Episode 3 of GSC showcasing leather recipe will come out very soon!

  2. Chris Chandler says:

Well, the first video made me go from ambivalent towards the faction to wanting to get a crew built up for Necromunda and Kill Team. Great presentation as always!

    1. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

Ooh! That’s amazing. I’m glad you enjoyed the first episode!

  3. Marco Herreras says:

Please bring the remaining videos quickly!!!
Some other possible sources of inspiration that come quickly to mind (not only for the aesthetics, but for the mood) are the classic films Tetsuo, Pi, and maybe the manga Abara…

    1. Dark Ages Workshop says:

We’re working on them! If things go smoothly we should have a new GSC episode every friday, except just between Christmas and New Year’s Eve as we take a small break.
Yes, absolutely, if you didn’t I highly suggest watching our Tyranid course and specifically Episode 4, you will be surprised of what’s in there!
The idea for this Genestealer Cults was generated right after I finished that episode.

      1. Marco Herreras says:

I watched indeed Tyranid Episode 4, but I’ll have to thoroughly review it. I just finished viewing for the third time in a row Genestealer Cult Ep. 3 (the third time pausing every few seconds to fully grasp everything) and I am totally overwhelmed. Can’t wait to try all these techniques on new minis…

      2. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

That’s awesome!! I’m glad you are enjoying it!

There are super awesome kitbashes and paint jobs, as per usual. I must ask, if one cannot acquire the Empire bits, would there be any substitute that you could use? Either way, amazing guide and videos so far. Super excited to see the rest.

There’s some Pike&Shotte plastic kits by Warlord but I think they’re small. I would go with Highland Miniatures or Reptilian Overlords, which are 3D printable! I would go that route if you want those puffed sleeves. However consider that with the Old World coming out next year, GW might consider re-releasing the old Empire sprues, which would be awesome for any fantasy and Mordheim.

    2. Dark Ages Workshop says:

Empire bits are still available and with the coming out of Old World they are probably coming back full time.
However, as an alternative, if you look for that landsknecht / puffed sleeves aesthetic, I can recommend Reptilian Overlords and Highland Miniatures.
3D printed figures-bits, seem of nice quality!

Really looking forward to the other leather colour videos. I have a Nighthaunt army I’m trying to paint where instead of cloth they were buried in leathers, and I would like to paint up any hero units in something other than black.

Hope to see those videos soon, in the meantime these are great to watch!

These are unbelievably evocative and meticulous, fantastic building!

  7. nickduff says:

Quick question? How do you do the miniature and base separately?

  8. Eric Kooistra says:

What is the fine “paper base” powder you’re using?

    1. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

It’s called Paver Base. It is a bag of rock and rock dust you can get from MOST hardware stores.

      1. Eric Kooistra says:

Ohhhh! Thanks, and many thanks to you, Alessandro, and guest content creators on the platform for reinvigorating my love for the painting side of the hobby! I’m much more of a builder than a painter but seeing all the incredible grimdark techniques has really struck a chord. Can’t wait for my Villainy Inks!!!

  9. Scott Kerr says:

This is a fantastic video. I learned a lot and am glad I am back.

    1. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

      Welcome back!

  10. Carl Hellicar says:

This was a great series, going to try the glue technique soon I think.
The kit bashes and paint jobs were next level, looking forward to the next course.

I have been trying to find pavers base in the UK but can’t seem to find it. Wonder what it is called over here.

    1. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

      Try tile grout.

  11. hamish hindson says:

would any texture paint work fir your cloth recipe? I currently have ak interactives neutral texture for rough terrain and am wondering if that would work as well.

  12. taylur.dykehouse says:

    1. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:
