how to paint: nighthaunts

nighthaunt in the grimdark style

This scheme is a classic for grimdark Nighthaunt and guaranteed to make them stand out in any occasion.
You will learn how to paint worn and weathered shrouds and cloaks for the shuddering Nighthaunt, spattered with unholy blood. Here we teach the most realistic blood spattering technique for miniature painting, made famous with our Lady Olynder video.
Of course, the ill-lit sickly green light evokes a unique and fitting dark fantasy atmosphere, so you can expect to see how to render some simple but effective OSL effects, both on models and on a scenic base. Lastly, you will witness the entirety of the Black Coach, so be confident to find effective ways to paint wood, curtains, lanterns and ghostly steeds.

I have the same issue as Christian has where the blood coagulates. Any tips or tricks to fix this?

I use more water in that case. It’s a fiddly technique until you get the hang of it. Just keep practicing.

I have the same problem: so you thin blood for the blood god with water and mineral spirits before flicking?
I only get big blobs if I add mineral spirits to blood for the blood god :/
Do you maybe have a rough estimate of the ratio?
Thanks in advance, this effect looks amazing!

It’s a tough technique to get just right, but it is all about getting the perfect mix of spirits, water, and blood. The mineral spirits will make the blood bead up, and adding water will slowly start to adjust the tension. So just keep adding little bits of water until you get the blood and spirits to start flowing and streaking.

Thank you for your reply. I think I wasnt quite clear: I mean BEFORE you add water, lets call it the “flicking phase ” from the brush. How do you load the brush? My Problem is that i cant get the flicking small beads on the miniature like in the video part 3, 4:40 Minutes. Since the mineral spirits dont mix with the blood for the blood god, i cant quite make out how you prepare the paint, if its a lot of spirits with a little blood or vice vera. Help would be appreciated 🙂 Everything after that, the smearing phase works well

      4. Zatcaskagoon Miniatures says:

If you are having trouble getting the paint and spirits to hold on the brush go ahead and add a touch of water to receive the tension

      5. Jan Mertens says:

Oh thank you so much for replying. Yeah I didn’t think of adding a bit of water beforehand!

        No worries!

Just wondering is there a paints/tools list anywhere for these tutorials?

I am also wondering if there is a paint list somewhere. Sometimes it can be hard to understand the names of the paints.
