Learn the basic techniques and products used in the Grimdark Painting Style. These techniques will forever change your hobby life and open doors to creative expressive you’ve never tapped into before. This course is perfect for the beginner painter, those wanting to explore the Grimdark Style, and who want a refresher to the basics; as it goes over the Grimdark Compendium’s Basic Reductive Technique of basing out your miniature, applying an enamel or oil wash, and removing the wash.
What is the Grimdark Style? To put it simply, the Grimdark Style takes the settings from which it is derived from seriously. The Warhammer universes are either dark-dystopian or dark-fantasy. Many artist painting miniatures from these settings strive to accurately depict the look and feel of these worlds through our work. So close your eyes, try your best to imagine a dark and dystopian world that sees only war, and get ready to learn how to paint that image.

Hey mate – when you suggest using a clear coat lacquer with oils, is that the kean strip lacquer thinner?
chevi.miller
Please don’t use Klean Strip for hobby paints or clear coats. It is not formulated for hobby paints. There are 2 lacquer thinners just for this type of work, first is Mr. Color lacquer thinner and the 2nd is Tamiya’s lacquer thinner. I’ve been using both for many years. Klean Strip is mostly use for cleaning and is a harsh thinner. Both tamiya and Mr.color are synthetic lacquer thinners made just for hobby painting and airbrushing.

Lacquer varnish/coat is separate from the thinner. Here’s one… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006O55ZK (they also make a matte version). Lacquer thinner will do the same thing as if you sprayed mineral spirits on the model.

How long will the oils stay active? is it long enough to do a squad of space marines or do you concentrate on just one at a time?

The Learn Grimdark course will be updated once Villainy Ink launches, and I can remake the series with enamels that are available for purchase.

Thanks for the great series! I have made some good progression with enamels and oils but really struggle to clean up acrylic washes (and enamels and oils) with isopropyl alcohol. I often just remove back to the primer. I try to be very gentile not rubbing the model, but so far no luck. Do you have any further tips than being very gentile with the q-tip?

Can turpentine be used in place of mineral spirits to achieve grimdark techniques? I have some turpentine but no mineral spirits and wonder if I need to order some.

Technically, yes.

You are blowing my mind. Thank you so much for making these videos. I’ve been dreading painting because frankly I’m not inspired by the classic painting style with 100 steps and tedious amounts of edge highlighting. I’ve painted a few models that way and just can’t bring myself to paint a whole army in that style. The moment I first watched you demonstrating the reductive technique inspiration struck like lighting. I’m excited again. Your models have such an amazing atmophere to them and I can’t wait to start experimenting.

I’m going crazy trying to find a color match for the blightlord terminator in episode 1, does anyone have any pointers? I’ve tried duck egg green and deck tan over rhinox hide so far with no success.
